VDO Sensors and Sender Units

Most gauge faults turn out to be sender faults. The sender sits on the engine, the gearbox or in the tank, where heat, vibration and corrosion wear it out, and a gauge can only be as accurate as the sender feeding it. VDO senders are built to the resistance curve of VDO gauges, so a matched gauge and sender read true across the whole dial.

The VDO senders on Omnipart fall into four groups. Temperature senders and switches read coolant, oil, transmission and cylinder head temperature, or close a warning light at a set point. Pressure senders read oil or air pressure, with or without a warning contact. Fuel level senders measure the tank, as tubular senders cut to depth or lever-arm senders with a float. Pulse generators give the speed signal for electronic speedometers and tachographs.

For each sender, check three things before ordering: the range, which has to match the gauge; the thread, which has to match the boss on the engine or tank; and the earth path, because some senders earth through their body and others need a separate insulated return.
