VDO Speed Pulse Generators

A pulse generator gives an electronic speedometer or tachograph its speed signal. It sends a set number of pulses for every turn of the gearbox output shaft or a toothed wheel, and the instrument converts the pulse count to speed using the w/km value set at installation.

The main families on this page are these. Screw-in senders with an M22 x 1.5 thread replace a mechanical speedo cable at the gearbox; the 2159 series has a 4-pin connector in male or female form and the 2155 series has 3 pins. Integrated probe senders read a toothed wheel through the gearbox casing, in probe lengths of 19.8, 25, 35, 63.2 and 90 mm, with round or flat terminals. KITAS II+ senders are the encrypted type for digital tachographs, in probe lengths from 19.8 to 115 mm.

To choose, start with the take-off point: a cable port takes a screw-in sender, a probe bore takes an integrated sender of the same probe length. Then check the connector against the loom, and for a tachograph confirm that the head expects a KITAS sender. The speedometer fitting guide covers calibration once the sender is in.
