VDO Pressure Senders and Switches

A VDO pressure sender turns oil or air pressure into a resistance that the gauge reads. The spans on this page are 0 to 2, 3, 5, 10 and 25 bar, and the sender span has to match the gauge: 5 bar for most petrol engines, 10 bar for diesels and 25 bar for transmissions and hydraulics. Threads include M10 x 1, M12 x 1.5, M14 x 1.5, M18 x 1.5, 1/8"-27 NPTF and 3/8"-18 NPTF.

Many senders carry a warning contact as well as the gauge output. The contact closes below a set pressure, between 0.25 and 5.5 bar depending on the part, and drives a low oil pressure light or buzzer from the same hole. Insulated-contact senders have a separate earth terminal for engines where the block is not a reliable earth, and the dual-output senders can feed two gauges, for example on a boat with a second helm.

Pressure switches have no gauge output and only open or close at their switch point. Normally open (N/O) switches close as pressure rises, normally closed (N/C) switches open, and the points listed here run from 30 to 600 kPa. If the sender would sit where vibration is severe, the 300 mm extension pipe moves it off the engine.
