VDO Temperature Gauges

VDO temperature gauges are built for a specific reading, and the dial span tells you which. Coolant gauges read 40 to 120 °C, oil and transmission gauges 50 to 150 °C, and cylinder head gauges 60 to 200 °C for air-cooled engines. There are also ambient gauges from -25 to +50 °C and exhaust gas pyrometers that read 100 to 900 °C on ViewLine, with a SingleViu pyrometer reading to 1 000 °C.

Most of the gauges on this page are 52 mm electrical instruments that read a resistive sender. They come from Cockpit International and Cockpit Vision, which are built for 12 V or 24 V, and from ViewLine and SingleViu, which run on both. The Cockpit mechanical gauges are different: they read through a sealed capillary tube with the bulb in the engine, and they are sold in 1 600, 2 600 and 4 000 mm capillary lengths, so measure the run from the engine to the dash before you order.

An electrical gauge reads true only with the sender built for its range and resistance curve. The SingleViu listings print the sender resistance they expect, and the temperature senders page lists VDO senders by range and thread. If you are replacing a gauge, the range printed on the old dial and its part number are the quickest way to the right pair.
